Chasing Mailboxes Coffeeneuring Challenge 2014: Summary

This part of Québec, Pontiac County in the Outaouais, is mostly farmland, lakes, rivers, forest, and lots of gravel roads. As such I have found Coffeeneuring an interesting challenge. From home the closest Café is 17.5km. It is one of 2 or 3 “Cafés” in the area.  No Starbucks, Tim Hortons, etc. We have a few convenience stores (we call them dépanneur), again “close” like the cafés. The closest gas stations are the same distance.

This post is a summary of the seven different coffees for the 2014 Challenge. Some of these “Coffees” have been posted earlier. I will reference those posts.

Coffeeneuring Coffee #1

  • Date: October 5th, 2014.
  • Route: Magic Rd. to Shawville & return via the Cycloparc PPJ and Thorne Lake Rd.
  • Distance: 34.84 km.
  • Weather: Sunny & clear, cool 5c, 10-15kmh WSW wind.
  • Coffee & Location: Triple espresso with brunch (fruit & yogurt – my own, not the coffee shop’s) at Art Brûlant.
  • Observations: Magic Rd. was magical. Saw coyote crossing road. Leaves gone on ash trees. Clouds gathering with wind at my back on return. The wind, deer and squirrels took all the apples! Flushed a Grouse on Thorne Lk. Rd. Road hunters out – Grouse season!
  • Art Brûlant has no bicycle racks, but cyclists usually lean their bikes against the front shop windows. The bikes are easily seen from inside. A security factor.

Coffeeneuring coffee #2

  • Date: October 12th, 2014. Canadian Thanksgiving Weekend.
  • Route: Thorne Lk. Rd. – Mtn.Rd. – Yach Rd. Loop.
  • Distance: 38.5km.
  • Weather: Sunny & clear. Cool starting at 0c. High of 9c. No Wind!
  • Coffee & Location: Coffee was Sumatra Blue Tawar at Yach Rd. Cemetery. Accompanied by “lunch” — nuts and dried fruit. Café without walls.
  • Observations: Testing new 650b setup and fenders. Fewer leaves on trees. Route through hardwood, Maple,Beech forest. Golden light through the leaves. Very little traffic. Actually saw some people walking the road closer to the end of Yach Rd. (Long weekend visitors?). Flushed a few grouse. Very ’up and down’.
  • For more details see my post on this blog from October 15th 2014.

Coffeeneuring coffee # 3

  • Date: October 19th, 2014.
  • Route: 11th Line, Town Line, Wesley Line, Shriner Rd. & return
  • Distance: 17.65 km.
  • Weather: Temp. -4c to 0c, Wind NNW 20-30kmh, overcast, some snow, ice on bird bath.
  • Coffee & Location: Coffee was a Galapagos, San Cristobel, El Cafetal at a favourite fishing hole. Café without walls.
  • Observations: Surprised at how cold it felt while riding – especially into the wind. Fishing hole – long past the trout season. Even fewer leaves on the trees this time. Even with the oaks. Tamaracks are turning colour. Still a lot of colour in the Sumacks. Flushed some ducks on arrival at the fishing hole. Wood Ducks or Hooded Mergansers. Grouse and Black Eyed Juncos on the roadside.

  • Route: Thorne Lake Rd. to Ragged Chute Rd. & return
  • Distance: 14.60 km.
  • Weather: Mostly cloudy, Temp. -5c, Wind WNW 20 kmh.
  • Coffee & Location: Double Espresso at Trish and Michael’s

Coffeeneuring coffee # 5

  • Observations: Good coffee, good desert, and though I wasn’t there for a meal this time those are good too. A good deal of locally sourced produce used here at the Cafe 349. I posted about this outing here.
  • There is a bicycle rack across the street at the library, though I have seen bikes out in front of the cafe.

Coffeeneuring coffee # 6

  • Date: November 2nd, 2014.
  • Route: Loop = 11th Line, Dagg Line, 10th Line, Thorne Lake Rd, 11th Line.
  • Distance: 6.81 km.
  • Weather: Mostly cloudy, Temp. 0c to 4c, Wind NNW 22 kmh.
  • Coffee & Location: Coffee was a Galapagos, San Cristobel, El Cafetal  at the Dam Creek bridge – not a fishing hole! Café without walls.
  • Observations: Most leaves are gone, except for the Tamaracks and Beech trees. Both of these trees really come into their own at this time of year. Yesterday’s snow didn’t stay. Surprisingly Dry. Little mud.
  • I posted on this outing here. No cheesecake or trout, but no other people either!

Coffeeneuring coffee # 7

  • Date: November 9th, 2014.
  • Route: Loop = 11th Line, Dagg Line, 10th Line, Killoran line, 12th Line, Thorne Lake Rd., Town Line, 12th Line, Thorne Lake Rd., 11th Line

  • Weather: Partly cloudy, Temp. 0c, Wind SE 20 kmh.
  • Coffee & Location: Coffee was an Ethiopian from the Kaffa region. A Wild Forest Harvest. At another creek – again not a fishing hole! Another Café without walls.
  • Observations: This is a route that I have tried to do through out the year to get a feeling for it in the different seasons. Especially the spot where I stopped for the coffee. It was nice to add it as part of the Coffeeneuring challenge.
