So far this spring I haven’t been out and about in the garden as much as I would like. The neglect in the yard and garden is hard to hide! We haven’t gotten around to planting any greens or veges, the flower beds are not weeded as they should. Some transplanting hasn’t been done. The lawn has been mowed only once….I finally despaired and took a scythe to the hay field around the house! (doesn’t look half bad – something to consider).
I am sticking by my excuse though…….. starting up “Art Brûlant” as an addition to “IMPRESSIONS” has taken a lot of time and energy.
That being said, it is not the point of this post, rather as we move towards the 21st of June and the Summer Solstice there is something I have noticed about the space we live in at home. This Spring seems to have brought with it more of an abundance of these things I have called “Signs of Spring”!
The immediate environs of the yard and house seem to have produced a wonderful share of these “Signs of Spring”. In the tended garden itself I cannot say that there are more of these “signs”, but otherwise there seems to be more bird sightings, more bird calls, more frogs, more blossoms on the trees and bushes that flowered. Just more!!!!!!!
I am not sure why this is the case. Maybe it is just my imagination, but I don’t think so. As for the birds I think one of the reasons is that over the years we have planted numerous species of native plants, bushes and trees. These have in time produced a much more diverse habitat as well as their own flowers and fruit. This has supplied nesting and feeding habitat for a larger variety of birds then ever could have called the former old pasture around the house ‘home’.
It has been great to see this change take place. Maybe the habitat change has also influenced other things as well. Like the flowering bushes and trees. With the change in habitat, maybe we have more insects and pollinators (again more bird food)…..etc.
Now if I could just convince the birds to eat more mosquitos, Black Flies and Deer Flies!
