Signs of Spring……….Arrivals and Wakeups

This past weekend was busy at our place with new arrivals and wakeups. That good ole’ spring thunder storm was a literal “wakeup” for Monday!

  • A Ruffed Grouse was calling from west of the house this morning as I left on my bike
  • While eating breakfast this morning a Phoebe landed in the Ash tree in front of the window
  • This morning’s walk went by a Snowshoe Hare that was wishing he had worn a different coat — white really stands out against low hanging Spruce boughs!
  • My regular route into Shawville and the shop was washed out from Monday’s thunder and rain shower — I don’t really like riding the highway!
  • The other night I heard the Woodcock doing his thing….that wonderful call and flight
  • The Snipe are also back with their wonderful whistling courtship flight
  • A Bluebird flew through as I was pruning Apple trees on Sunday
  • Sunday we watched from the window as a young Fox hunted his way, in the rain, through the now snow-free grass — that graceful cat-like pounce!
  • The Spring Peepers have declared their wake up for all of us to hear
  • In all that sound of the Peepers I heard the occasional duck-like call of some Wood Frogs
  • And then also out of all of that sound came the not-quite-drowned-out call of the occasional Chorus Frog
  • The Pussy Willows have started
  • A Crocus popped up where I don’t remember putting one
  • The Snowdrops have started blooming
